A very enjoyable first day was had by some 15 attendees who are at the 2 day workshop for watercolour lessons. Our venue in the lower Ulladulla Civic Centre is great & the Society has had very good support with some attendees who have travelled from Wollongong, Goulburn and out of Sydney.
Chan’s setup is excellent, we have video projection for painting subjects and his own working area is covered by overhead camera to TV output. This means we have excellent overview of his techniques and style as the tutorial progresses.
Day 1 – Saturday – Our first subject was a view of Mollymook Beach, water and landscape with people.
The second painting project for the day was a view of The Megalong Valley.
Day-2 Sunday – Many arrived early to touch up and complete yesterday’s last challenge.. First up today is Ulladulla Harbour scene, not just replicating a photo.
Second challenge a Street Scene, buildings, cars, people and reflections balance with perspective.
All attendees left with a rewarding learning experience, thoroughly recommended.
WORKSHOP OUTLINE : Participants will explore many aspects of COLOUR, from the uses of the colour wheel for basic colour mixing, to its applications in painting realistic shadow colour, spatial depth, colour temperature and thematic effects. There will be discussion about the history of colour making and derivation of pigments, the social and personal psychology of colour and of its many uses, including its relationship to music.
Information about the characteristics of different colours and various brands of paint and their qualities will be explained so that more informed decisions can be made about purchasing colours.
Colour exercises will centre around mixing convincing shadow tones, and in applying colour temperature to landscape painting.
Aspects of COMPOSITION will also be considered with a look at some general guiding principles for good composition, but more specifically in the application of systems like the golden mean, with examples of its use and simple exercises to learn how to apply it in painting.
Bring standard watercolour materials, ensuring that you have a warm and cool of each of the primary colours. (E.G. – Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Red, Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Prussian Blue).
It will be helpful if you have some drawing/ note paper, a kneadable eraser and a ruler.
You could also bring a few photos of things you would like to paint, some of your previous paintings, or reproductions of artworks you admire.
